BWX Technologies, Inc.

BWXT (BWX Technologies, Inc.) is a prominent supplier of nuclear components and fuel to the U.S. government. Located in Mt. Vernon, Indiana, BWXT specializes in producing heavy components for naval nuclear reactors used in submarines and aircraft carriers, including pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pressurizers, and steam generators. The company celebrated its 60th anniversary in September 2023 and has a rich history dating back to the 1850s.

BWXT originated as the Babcock & Wilcox Co., primarily manufacturing boilers for heat and power generation. Over the years, it expanded into nuclear power generation for both commercial electricity and naval propulsion. The company’s transition into nuclear power generation aligned with its expertise in steam-based technology.

One unique aspect of BWXT is the Mt. Vernon facility’s impressive infrastructure, boasting two 500-ton cranes with a combined lift capacity of 1,000 tons, making it accessible to ocean-going barges. This facility is essential for sending heavy components worldwide.

BWXT stands out for its employees and their performance. BWXT takes pride in its reputation for honesty and integrity and promotes an internal culture that values diversity, teamwork, candor, and accountability. The company’s strong commitment to community outreach and volunteering is integral to its work culture.

The Evansville region, where BWXT operates, benefits from a skilled workforce produced by local educational institutions, fostering strong partnerships that contribute to the company’s success.

BWXT is unique in the region due to its specialization in heavy component manufacturing for naval nuclear reactors, a capability limited to a select few sites in North America. The company’s close ties to the U.S. military, including support for NASA’s human spaceflight programs, are sources of pride for its workforce.

BWXT has recently invested more than $80 million into the Mt. Vernon plant to ensure that it is properly equipped for safe work for the future. Upgrades to equipment capabilities have included multiple machining centers, large gantry robotic welding centers, and state-of-the-art support equipment for machining and welding.

BWXT is currently looking to grow its work force of QA professionals, machinists, welders, electricians, and engineers. Find out more on their website, here: https://www.bwxt.com/careers
